Models That Answer

A Practitioner's Guide to Model-Based Systems Engineering with SysML v2

Brian Moberley · Paperback and Kindle · 492 pages, full color

Most models describe a system. This book is about building one you can ask questions of, and that finds its own contradictions before the hardware does.

It follows one real product, the Fish On! rod sensor system, through 23 chapters: stakeholder concerns and views, structure, behavior, requirements and verification, then asking the model and reasoning over it, design structure matrices, language models, and making it work on a team. Every listing comes from one model, printed in full, and every answer in the book is real reasoner output.

SysML v2 at a Glance

The Language on One Spread per Idea

Brian Moberley · Paperback and Kindle · 132 pages, black and white

The companion to Models That Answer, and the place to start. SysML v2 is a new language, not a revision of v1. This book teaches it one idea at a time, in 53 two-page spreads: the code on the left, the same model in the OMG graphical notation on the right.

Every listing is checked with a SysML v2 parser before printing. Each spread also shows a common mistake with the parser's real error message, and the SysML v1 habit that the idea replaces. The examples are small pieces of the Fish On! rod sensor system, and most spreads point to the chapter of Models That Answer where the topic is used at full scale. A notation quick reference and a keyword index make it a desk reference.
