About

Brian Moberley

Senior Systems Engineer at Innovative Defense Technologies · Air Force veteran

I am a Senior Systems Engineer at Innovative Defense Technologies, where we build automated test and evaluation solutions for the DoD. I build SysML models of things that have to work — missiles, bomb fuzes, satellites, ground vehicles — and I have spent a long time learning which modeling habits survive contact with a real program and which ones quietly fall apart.

MBSE iNsights started as a YouTube channel because the tooling documentation answers what the button does and almost never answers why you would press it. Cameo Systems Modeler is deep and unforgiving, SysML v2 is genuinely new, and most of what an engineer actually needs to know lives in the gap between the specification and the practice. That gap is what I make videos about, and now what I write about here.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a commercial pilot. Both of those shape how I think about systems engineering more than any methodology course did: aviation takes verification seriously because the alternative is unacceptable, and that instinct — how would anyone actually know this is true? — is the one I keep coming back to in models.

Books

I co-wrote Pain-Free MBSE with Doug Rosenberg, and AI Assisted MBSE with SysML with Tim Weilkiens and Doug Rosenberg.

What you will find here

Long-form articles on modeling practice, and written companions to the videos — the steps, the model excerpts, and the parts that are easy to get wrong. Everything here is written by me. There is no content team and no generator.

Everything here is written in a personal capacity. The views are mine and do not represent Innovative Defense Technologies or any customer.
